This unit introduces the Relative Strength Index (RSI), another widely used momentum indicator, complementing the MACD covered in the previous unit. RSI takes a different mathematical approach, but shares MACD's role as a tool for assessing momentum, requiring the same careful, context-aware interpretation.
This overview introduces five areas covered in this unit: the RSI scale, overbought and oversold zones, RSI divergence, how RSI behaves in trending markets, and — critically — why an overbought reading does not automatically mean a trader should sell.
This is general educational content. It does not suggest that RSI, on its own, provides a guaranteed trading signal.
What Is RSI?
RSI, developed by J. Welles Wilder and introduced in 1978, is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and magnitude of recent price changes, expressed on a fixed scale, explored in detail in the next lesson.
RSI vs MACD
While both RSI and MACD are momentum indicators, they differ in approach: MACD (covered in the previous unit) is derived from the relationship between two moving averages, while RSI is calculated directly from the ratio of average gains to average losses over a set period, without directly referencing moving averages in its core formula.
What's Covered in This Unit
- RSI scale — the fixed 0–100 range RSI operates within.
- Overbought and oversold zones — the traditional reference levels.
- RSI divergence — comparing RSI behaviour to price behaviour, similar to the MACD divergence concept.
- RSI in trending markets — an important nuance about how RSI behaves differently in trends versus range-bound conditions.
- Why 'overbought' does not automatically mean sell — a critical closing perspective.
Summary
RSI is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and magnitude of price changes on a fixed 0–100 scale, calculated differently from MACD but serving a similar analytical purpose. This unit covers the RSI scale, traditional overbought/oversold zones, divergence, RSI behaviour in trending markets, and closes with an important caveat about why an overbought reading doesn't automatically call for selling.
