GOLD FALLS BELOW $4,000 FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE JULY AS YIELDS AND USD WEIGH

Gold fell below $4,000 per ounce in Asian trading on Friday for the first time since July, leaving prices roughly a quarter below the January peak of more than $5,400. Elevated Treasury yields, a firm US dollar and expectations of further Fed tightening continue to weigh on the metal.

HSBC strategists have said that US Treasury yields have become the main driver of gold prices. When yields rise, holding an asset that pays no interest becomes more expensive. Persistent inflation concerns support expectations of further Fed tightening, while a strong US Dollar makes gold more expensive for overseas buyers.

Equity market sell-offs have also triggered gold selling. According to HSBC asset management strategists, sharp stock market falls can trigger margin calls, forcing investors to sell bullion to raise cash. This pattern reappeared when a slump in chip stocks pulled the Nasdaq down more than 2.5% as gold also fell sharply. HSBC’s James Steel argued that this selling is not evidence that gold has failed: when inflation fears returned and stocks fell, investors needed cash and gold provided it. He also suggested that January’s rally drew in a lot of new money and left the market overly long, meaning part of the decline may reflect a necessary reset in positioning.

Central banks continue to diversify their reserves into bullion, while HSBC points to steady ETF inflows. Regulatory changes allow major Chinese insurers and Indian asset managers to hold gold, while Steel noted that Chinese demand has shifted towards larger institutional bars. Concerns over government debt and inflation continue to support the debasement trade, and HSBC’s asset management team maintains that the strategic case for holding gold remains intact.

The next major catalyst is the Federal Reserve’s October 28 policy decision. InvestingLive notes that a softer Fed message or falling Treasury yields could reduce the cost of holding gold and allow structural buyers to regain control. Conversely, a hawkish Fed stance, rising yields or further equity market turbulence could maintain downward pressure, leaving the market focused on how far below $4,000 gold may fall before longer-term buyers step in.
