US CPI WEDNESDAY: HEADLINE HEATS UP, CORE COOLS
The market focus for the week is centered on September US CPI, which is due Wednesday at 8:30 AM EDT. The inflation report is expected to provide fresh signals on Federal Reserve policy expectations, while Fed speakers, including Bowman on Wednesday and Warsh late Thursday (US time), are also on the calendar.
Headline CPI is forecast to rise 0.6% month-on-month and 3.6% year-on-year, while core CPI is expected to increase 0.2% month-on-month and 2.5% year-on-year. The headline versus core split could point to pressure from energy or other volatile components, while core CPI provides a cleaner read on underlying inflation, which remains a key input for Fed policy.
A hotter-than-expected core CPI above 0.2% could reduce rate-cut hopes. Yields and the dollar would likely rise, while growth stocks could come under pressure. A softer core reading would support a more dovish tone, potentially benefiting rate-sensitive sectors.
Thursday’s data will provide additional insight into economic momentum. Retail Sales are expected to rise 0.3% month-on-month, while Core Retail Sales are forecast at 0.5%. PPI is expected to increase 0.5% month-on-month, with Core PPI at 0.3%. Initial jobless claims are forecast at 195K, suggesting layoffs remain low.
For market participants, the key factors remain September CPI, core inflation trends, Treasury yields, US Dollar direction, growth stocks, retail sales, PPI data and Fed communication, which may provide further context for major financial markets.
