The Rising Value of Gold: What Investors Need to Know About Current Market Dynamics

Gold has been on an upward trajectory since the start of 2024, and this trend has continued into 2025. As shown in the chart above, we can clearly see a strong uptrend with higher highs being formed. Minor dips are being aggressively bought, pushing the price above $2900.

Gold as an Inflation Hedge

Gold has traditionally been viewed as a hedge against inflation. If inflation rises faster than expected, investors often flock to gold, driving up its price. According to a recent survey by the University of Michigan, year-ahead inflation expectations jumped from 3.3% last month to 4.3% this month. This marks the highest reading since November 2023 and indicates two consecutive months of unusually large increases. It is only the fifth time in 14 years that we have seen such a large one-month rise in year-ahead inflation expectations.

Geopolitical Risks and Safe-Haven Demand

Gold tends to benefit during periods of heightened geopolitical uncertainty and financial market volatility. Investors seek safe-haven assets, and gold often takes the lead in these times. Recently, unresolved geopolitical tensions and the possibility of a trade war have been significant factors driving gold prices even higher.

Central Banks and Gold Reserves

Central banks around the world, particularly in emerging markets, have been significant buyers of gold in recent years. The Chinese government, through its central bank, has been actively increasing its gold reserves. In January, China’s central bank expanded its gold reserves for the third consecutive month. This trend of increasing gold reserves by central banks has been a major driver behind gold's rise.

Headwinds for Gold

Higher Interest Rates:

A persistent hawkish stance from central banks, especially the Federal Reserve (Fed), could keep upward pressure on yields and the U.S. dollar. This may weigh on gold prices, as higher yields tend to reduce the appeal of non-interest-bearing assets like gold.

Risk-On Sentiment:

If risk appetite rebounds in the markets, investors may divert their funds from gold into riskier assets like equities. This shift in investor sentiment could reduce demand for gold.

Declining Safe-Haven Demand:

Gold benefits from geopolitical uncertainty and financial market volatility, but if global tensions ease or markets stabilize, the demand for gold as a safe-haven asset may decline.

Improved Global Economic Growth:

Gold tends to underperform during periods of strong economic growth, as investors favor riskier assets like equities. If global economic growth accelerates, gold could lose some of its appeal, as investors seek higher returns from riskier assets.

Seasonal Weakness:

Gold often experiences weaker performance between April and July. However, it typically rebounds in the fall due to increased demand during festival and wedding seasons in India and China.
