US DOLLAR REACTION MUTED AS MUFG SEES FOMC MINUTES SLIGHTLY HAWKISH

US DOLLAR REACTION MUTED AS MUFG SEES FOMC MINUTES SLIGHTLY HAWKISH

MUFG’s AI-driven textual analysis assessed the July FOMC Minutes as slightly more hawkish than expected, reflecting persistent inflation concerns and broader support for further tightening. However, MUFG said the signal was not strong enough to trigger a meaningful repricing of the Federal Reserve outlook.

According to MUFG, “several participants” supported a 25-basis-point rate increase in July, compared with “a few participants” in the June minutes, suggesting support for tighter policy extended beyond the three formal dissenters.

Artificial intelligence also featured in the inflation discussion. Policymakers noted that AI-related investment could support demand and near-term price pressures, while productivity gains from AI adoption could eventually lower costs and increase supply. MUFG therefore sees AI as a potential near-term inflation risk but a possible longer-term disinflationary force.

At the same time, the minutes contained a more accommodative signal on tariffs. Several participants judged that the price impact of earlier tariff increases was largely complete, while recently announced tariffs were expected to have a relatively modest effect on measured inflation.

Foreign-exchange reaction remained limited. MUFG noted that major FX pairs were largely unaffected by the minutes, with an earlier Treasury bond buyback announcement attracting greater market attention. The bank concluded that the minutes modestly strengthen the case for further tightening, but do not provide a sufficiently strong signal to drive sustained Fed repricing or a durable reversal in the broader US Dollar trend.

For market participants, the key variables remain future Fed tightening, inflation persistence and whether upcoming policy communication becomes strong enough to shift current market pricing. MUFG’s conclusions represent an institutional assessment rather than a confirmed Federal Reserve policy outcome.
