This lesson explains the basic technique for drawing trend lines, building directly on the higher highs/higher lows and lower highs/lower lows structural concepts from the previous unit.

This is general educational content describing a common charting technique.

01SECTION 01

What Is a Trend Line?

A trend line is a straight line drawn on a chart connecting a series of price points, generally used to visually represent the underlying trend structure. An uptrend line is typically drawn connecting a series of higher lows (covered in the previous unit), while a downtrend line is typically drawn connecting a series of lower highs.

02SECTION 02

Basic Technique for Drawing an Uptrend Line

To draw an uptrend line, a trader generally identifies at least two (and ideally more) sequential higher lows and draws a straight line connecting them, extending the line forward to project where future price reactions might occur if the trend structure continues.

03SECTION 03

Basic Technique for Drawing a Downtrend Line

To draw a downtrend line, a trader generally identifies at least two (and ideally more) sequential lower highs and draws a straight line connecting them, similarly extended forward.

04SECTION 04

Common Pitfalls in Drawing Trend Lines

A commonly discussed pitfall is drawing a trend line based on only two points, since two points can always be connected by a straight line regardless of whether they reflect a genuine, meaningful trend — a third point that the line also aligns with reasonably well is generally considered more meaningful confirmation. Another commonly discussed pitfall is forcing a trend line to fit price action by using extreme wick tips rather than a more representative connection, which can create a misleading impression of a cleaner trend than actually exists.

Summary

Trend lines are drawn by connecting sequential higher lows (for an uptrend) or lower highs (for a downtrend) with a straight line, extended forward to visually represent the underlying trend structure. Common pitfalls include drawing lines from only two points without further confirmation, and forcing lines to fit using extreme wick tips rather than a more representative connection.
