The Week Ahead: US Labor Data in Focus for the Dollar and Global Markets
The first full week of August shifts market attention toward economic data, led by Friday’s US Nonfarm Payrolls report. The US Dollar Index is trading near 99.90 following its decline in the final week of July.
Markets expect the US economy to add 91,000 jobs in July, compared with 57,000 in June, while the Unemployment Rate is forecast to rise to 4.3%. ISM Manufacturing, ISM Services, JOLTS Job Openings and ADP Employment will provide earlier signals on labor-market momentum and economic activity.
Stronger US data may reinforce expectations of a restrictive Federal Reserve stance, while softer figures could increase discussion of future policy easing. Shifts in these expectations may affect the US Dollar, Treasury yields and major currency pairs.
EUR/USD trades near 1.1530. Eurozone Retail Sales, Manufacturing and Services PMIs, Producer Price Index data and German Factory Orders will offer further insight into inflation, demand and industrial activity.
GBP/USD is near 1.3480. With a relatively quiet UK calendar, the pair may remain particularly sensitive to US ISM data, ADP Employment and Nonfarm Payrolls.
USD/JPY ended July near 159.10. Japanese Labor Cash Earnings and the Bank of Japan’s Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes will be monitored for indications on wage growth and the policy outlook.
AUD/USD trades near 0.7040. China’s Caixin Services PMI and July trade data, together with Australia’s Trade Balance, will provide updates on regional growth and external demand.
Gold ended the week near $4,050. US labor data, Treasury yields and Dollar movements remain key factors, as changes in employment and interest-rate expectations may influence demand for the precious metal.
