Weekly Market Outlook: Key Events Shaping the Financial Markets

Upcoming Events:

  • Monday: CPI/Core CPI Flash Estimate Eurozone, US ISM Manufacturing PMI.
  • Tuesday: Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes (AUD).
  • Wednesday: US ADP Non-Farm Employment Change, Crude Oil Inventories.
  • Thursday: ECB Rate Decision, US Unemployment Claims.
  • Friday: US Nonfarm Payrolls, US Unemployment Rate (Feb), Average Hourly Earnings.

Monday:

The Eurozone is preparing to release its preliminary Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation figures, offering an early glimpse into inflation trends for February 2025. These numbers, published by Eurostat, are referred to as the "flash estimate" and typically become available at the end of the reference month. The data provides a snapshot of price changes across the 20 Eurozone countries that use the euro.

The CPI tracks price shifts in goods and services commonly bought by households. These preliminary figures are closely watched as they provide early insight into inflationary pressures, which influence European Central Bank (ECB) policy decisions.

Additionally, the U.S. Institute for Supply Management (ISM) is set to release its Manufacturing PMI. This report surveys over 400 executives across 20 industries and monitors changes in new orders, production, employment, supplier deliveries, and inventories. A PMI above 50 signals growth, while below 50 suggests contraction.

Tuesday:

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will release the minutes from its February 17–18 meeting. These minutes offer insights into the Board’s discussions, economic outlook, inflation concerns, and monetary policy stance. Analysts and economists use this information to gauge the RBA’s likely next steps regarding interest rates.

Wednesday:

The U.S. ADP National Employment Change data for February 2025 will be released on March 5. This report tracks the monthly net change in private-sector employment, excluding government and agricultural jobs. It also includes industry, company size, and regional breakdowns, along with insights on pay growth.

The ADP report serves as an early indicator of labor market trends and can provide clues ahead of the official Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report set for release on Friday.

Thursday:

The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to cut rates again on March 6. Since June 2024, the ECB has lowered its deposit rate from 4% to 2.75% through five 25-basis-point cuts. Analysts anticipate a further cut to 2.5%, contingent on CPI figures released earlier in the week.

Additionally, the U.S. weekly Initial Jobless Claims are forecast to be 236k, slightly down from the previous week’s 242k, offering fresh insight into the state of the labor market.

Friday:

The U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report for February will be released, offering a snapshot of employment changes. Analysts expect job gains between 155,000 and 170,000. The outcome could significantly affect expectations around Federal Reserve policy.

A strong report may support the dollar and raise Treasury yields—potentially delaying rate cuts—while a weaker report could prompt a more dovish outlook, benefiting equities and gold.
