EUR/USD FACES DOWNWARD PRESSURE AS DOVISH ECB SIGNALS WEIGH ON EURO
EUR/USD faces increased downside pressure after European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde made more dovish-leaning comments, reducing expectations for an October ECB rate hike. According to ING analysis, the shift has also contributed to a wider SOFR-ESTR 2-year swap spread, which moved above 155 basis points.
Lagarde indicated that tighter financial conditions are limiting the pass-through of higher energy costs to the broader economy. She also emphasized that the ECB should adopt a “measured response” given the lack of evidence of significant second-round inflation effects.
The comments have reduced market expectations for an October ECB rate increase. ING noted that current pricing implies around 17 basis points for the Fed and 9 basis points for the ECB, while its macro team expects both central banks to wait until December.
From a market perspective, the different policy expectations between the Federal Reserve and ECB remain an important factor for EUR/USD. The Euro has remained relatively resilient so far, but softer ECB expectations could limit near-term support.
From a technical perspective, stronger US economic data could bring the 1.1320–1.1330 area into focus, corresponding to the summer lows cited by ING. This level remains an important downside reference for EUR/USD.
For market participants, the key factors remain ECB policy expectations, the Fed rate expectations, US economic data, the EUR/USD 1.1320–1.1330 area and changes in interest-rate differentials, which may provide further context for the near-term direction of the currency pair.
