BOJ HIKE LIFTS USD/JPY AS SPLIT VOTE LIMITS YEN SUPPORT

BOJ HIKE LIFTS USD/JPY AS SPLIT VOTE LIMITS YEN SUPPORT

The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, the highest level in 31 years, as widely expected by markets. Following the decision, USD/JPY moved higher toward 156.70 from around 156.25, as the rate increase was largely priced in before the announcement.

The Policy Board approved the move with a 7-2 vote, with two members dissenting against the hike. The split decision suggested a less unified policy outlook, reducing some of the immediate support for the Japanese Yen.

The dissenting members highlighted that inflation and economic conditions had not accelerated sufficiently to justify the increase, reflecting ongoing discussions around the pace of further policy adjustments.

Despite the softer Yen reaction, the Bank of Japan maintained its guidance that it would continue adjusting monetary policy based on economic activity, inflation trends and financial conditions. The BoJ also expects underlying inflation to continue moving toward around 2% through fiscal 2027, keeping attention on the future rate path.

From a technical perspective, USD/JPY remains focused on the 156.70 area after moving higher following the decision. Market attention remains on whether the pair can maintain momentum while traders assess future BoJ policy signals and broader currency market conditions.

For market participants, the key factors remain BoJ policy expectations, the 1.25% interest rate level, USD/JPY movements, inflation trends and the pace of future policy adjustments, which may provide further direction for the Yen and the currency pair.
